NBA game in Mexico City called off because of smoke

The game between the San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves in Mexico City was postponed because of smoky conditions inside the arena Wednesday.

The game will be made up in Minnesota at a later date.

The arena was evacuated about 45 minutes before the scheduled 9:30 p.m. EST tipoff when a generator malfunction outside the arena sent smoke pouring into the building, according to NBA spokeswoman Sharon Lima.

"I thought they were practicing fireworks," Spurs TV analyst Sean Elliott said. "A lot of teams do that before introductions. But then the smoke just kept creeping and it wasn't white smoke. It was like a brown dark smoke and it started taking over the whole court."

Fans had not yet been allowed into the arena for the NBA's first regular-season game in Mexico since Houston and Dallas played in Mexico City on Dec. 6, 1997, when the evacuation was ordered. The teams went to their buses, still wearing their practice gear.

at Portland 111, Oklahoma City 104: LaMarcus Aldridge had a season-high 38 points and added 13 rebounds and the Trail Blazers ended the Thunder's eight-game winning streak. Nicolas Batum made a three-pointer with 29.9 seconds to go that all but sealed it for Portland, which has won 14 of its last 15 games. The win also ended Oklahoma City's seven-game winning streak against the Trail Blazers.

Indiana 95, at Utah 86: Paul George scored 19 points and the Pacers won in Utah for the first time since Nov. 29, 2005. The Pacers were coming off their first two games in which they had given up more than 100 points, but Indiana outscored the Jazz, 27-19, in the fourth quarter and parlayed 14 Utah turnovers in 20 points.

at Cleveland 98, Denver 88: Kyrie Irving scored 23 points and the Cavaliers ended the Nuggets' seven-game winning streak. Tristan Thompson had a career-high 21 rebounds and 17 points for the Cavaliers, who won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Phoenix 97, at Houston 88: Eric Bledsoe had 20 points and seven assists to lead the Suns over the Rockets, who couldn't overcome a horrible shooting night from James Harden. Harden missed all 10 of his three-point attempts and made only three of 17 overall, finishing with 14 points. Dwight Howard had 15 points and 18 rebounds for the Rockets.

Dallas 100, at New Orleans 97: Dirk Nowitzki scored 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and the Mavericks held off the Pelicans when Ryan Anderson missed an open three-point try that would have sent the game to overtime. Jrue Holiday had a season-high 26 points for the Pelicans, who played without injured Anthony Davis for the second consecutive game.

Detroit 105, at Milwaukee 98: Andre Drummond had 24 points and 19 rebounds and the Pistons rode a strong second-half performance to hand the Bucks their 13th loss in 14 games.
