Angels stumble in loss to Boston Red Sox, 4-2

KEY MOMENT: The patient Red Sox, who have seen more pitchers than any team in the majors, forced Angels starter Jered Weaver to labor through a 35-pitch third inning in which they scored three times. By the seventh inning, Weaver, who hadn't lost since mid-June, was gone. After the Angels put the tying runs on with two outs in the ninth, Boston closer Koji Uehara struck out Kole Calhoun looking to end the game

AT THE PLATE: Boston's Dustin Pedroia had his sixth two-hit game in nine tries, driving in one run and scoring another in the Red Sox's three-run third. Yoenis Cespedes extended his modest hitting streak to four games, driving in his first two runs for the Red Sox with a double, and ex-Angel Mike Napoli hit his 14th homer of the season in the fifth. For the Angels, Mike Trout's scoring fly ball in the third inning gave him 80 runs driven in for the season from the second spot in the batting order, a club record. Calhoun had two singles.

ON THE MOUND: Former Dodgers prospect Allen Webster, acquired by the Red Sox in a nine-player trade two years ago, held the Angels to two runs and four hits in 62/3 innings to earn his third big league win.

INJURY REPORT: Pitchers Joe Thatcher and Mike Morin and infielder Grant Green continue to make progress in rehabbing injuries. Morin (3-3, 2.36 earned-run average in 41 games) needed four stitches to close a wound in his left foot over the weekend but has already begun running and throwing and is expected to return from the disabled list next weekend in Texas. Thatcher (1-1. 6.00 in eight appearances), is walking without a protective boot on his sprained left ankle and could be reactivated before the next homestand as well. Green, out since July 21 with a lumbar strain, is taking ground balls and swinging a bat but there is no timetable for his return. He was hitting .313 in 80 at-bats when he went on the disabled list.

EXTRA BASES: The Angels and Philadelphia Phillies will join in honoring former All-Star player and manager Jim Fregosi with a pregame tribute before their Aug. 12 game at Angel Stadium. Jim Fregosi Jr. will throw out the ceremonial first pitch and both teams will wear commemorative patches in memory of Fregosi, who died Feb. 14. Fregosi played 18 big league seasons for the Angels, Mets, Rangers and Pirates then managed both the Angels and Phillies into the playoffs. The Angels retired his No. 11 in 1998.

UP NEXT: Right-hander Garrett Richards (12-4, 2.58) ended a personal two-game losing streak with a complete-game shutout of the Dodgers in his last start. He'll be opposed by Clay Buchholz (5-7. 6.20), who has won only twice since June and gave up seven runs in each of his last two starts. On the air: TV: FS West. Radio: 830.
