Dodgers shut down Padres, 4-0

KEY MOMENT: The Dodgers led, 1-0, in the fourth inning, when the Padres put runners on second and third with none out. Dan Haren retired the next three batters — on a pop fly, strikeout and ground ball — and the Padres had squandered what turned out to be their biggest threat.

AT THE PLATE: Carl Crawford tied a franchise record with three doubles. He also had a single, drove in two runs and raised his batting average from .279 to .289 in one night. Justin Turner and Juan Uribe each had two hits, and Andre Ethier had a pinch-hit single — raising his season average as a pinch-hitter to .308 (eight for 26). Matt Kemp singled to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.

ON THE MOUND: Haren had the most impressive start of his late-season resurgence, pitching seven shutout innings. In his past seven starts, he is 5-1 with a 1.70 earned-run average. Haren (13-10), making a strong case to start Game 4 of a playoff series behind Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu, joined the other three pitchers to give the Dodgers four 13-game winners for the first time since 1985 (Orel Hershiser, Fernando Valenzuela, Jerry Reuss, Bob Welch).

UP NEXT: The Dodgers are off Thursday. On Friday, the Dodgers' Ryu (14-6, 3.16 ERA) faces the Giants' Madison Bumgarner (17-9, 3.02) at 7:15 p.m. at AT&T Park in San Francisco. TV: SportsNet LA. Radio: 570, 1020.
